Habana International Festival of New Latin American Cinema

Every year, in the first 2 weeks of December, cinema halls across Habana give their viewers a glimpse of the latest Latin American films that have been produced across the nation. This festival is called the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Habana (Havana) and is a tradition that first began in the year 1979.

Since then the festival has grown in leaps and bounds and has gone on to become one of the most important cinema festivals of its kind in this region. In its inaugural year, the renowned writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez was one of the judges, and through the years the International festival of New Latin American Cinema has been judged by some of the most Latin American Film Festivalwell known names in the world of Latin American cinema.

The films that are aired during this festival are some of the biggest productions of the year. They include cutting edge feature films, documentaries, short movies and animation films. The only criteria that must be met before sending a film to the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema is that the movies have to be either 16mm or 35mm video and that they should have been produced one year before the festival. All films that are featured in this festival will have to be either in Spanish or have Spanish sub- titles. Along with the screenings that occur at the event every year, there are also many informative seminars and presentations that take place.
