Travelling safe whilst in Cuba
It is human nature that controversy or negative news attracts more attention than good news stories and to thus wonder how safe Cuba is. The nature of the media has led to a string of stories over the last century which could be considered harming to the reputation of Cuba. The country has gained a reputation as a
dangerous place as a result of various drug and gang related stories.
The reality is, however that Cuba is one of the lowest crime rates in the western hemisphere and is a much safer location for the tourist than most other South American countries. Not only is Cuba a safe place, the inhabitants are in the main friendly and accommodating. Despite these positive qualities, there are certain things that you can do to ensure your safety when travelling in Cuba.
Walking alone at night - As with any city, it is not recommended to walk alone down side or small streets at night. You should always make an effort to stay with others and, where possible, stay near to crowds of people.
Avoid drawing attention to yourself - Make an effort to keep your noise to yourself, especially in quieter locations. If you do not draw attention to yourself then you won’t cause any faux pas.
Avoid showing too much skin - If you dress provocatively you are more likely to draw attention to yourself and attract unsavoury characters.
Exposure of money - Flashing cash in public not only goes against the Cuban ideal of not conducting business in public but it can also draw the attention of unsavoury characters. It is recommended to remain modest and, as with any travel, carry minimal amounts of cash.
Overall you will tend to find less problems than if you were in a normal UK or U.S. city at night and crime should not, at least at the time of writing, be a reason not to travel and enhoy the islands of Cuba.
