Why is Cuba fast becoming the number one destination for tourism?

Puzzle of Cuban flag

Cuba may only be 90 miles from the coast of Florida, but for many Americans it has always been a mysterious forbidden place. Now that the times are changing, Americans are beginning to realize what they have missed all these years. Cuba is the closest thing to paradise- it has year round warm weather, is surrounded by pristine blue waters, has miles of soft sandy beaches, there is exotic music, very friendly people, plenty of rum and of course, the world famous Cuban cigars. But Cuba is a lot more than just being a tropical playground.

American v European Tourists

For those who have never been to Cuba, the first trip is an eye-opener. The moment you land at the airport, you will be greeted by warm friendly people. And then as you step outside, you will get to see the real Cuba- vibrant, energetic, full of color and loud music. Soon you will realize why Cuba is infectious and just impossible not to like

The US and Cuba are still working out their differences and today Americans can visit the island anytime as long as they obtain the license (see below). There are direct flights from Miami to Cuba and soon other American cities will follow the same pathway. Because of some political issues still left to be resolved between the Cuban and American administration, for those who plan to visit Cuba for a holiday one does need to apply for a “people-to-people” license. This license is readily available from most licensed tour operators, who often include the fee in the inclusive tour package. This type of inclusive trip is meant to be educational and cultural. In order to get this license one must apply 45-60 days ahead before departure. This restriction only applies to Americans. For Americans wanting to avoid this government paperwork, they can fly to Cuba from almost any other international destination without this hassle as long as they have a valid passport. However, be warned that your US credit card will not work and there are penalties if you arrive in Cuba via the backdoor, if you get caught.

There are no such problems for visitors from other countries including Canada and Europe. The majority of people plan an all inclusive trip to Cuba. There are all sorts of packages available ranging in prices from $700 a week to $ 5,000 a week. Cuba has large resorts in many cities, all of which offer a unique Cuban experience.

So what does Cuba have to offer that is so unique?

The first thing most people will note is that Cuba still has vintage American cars from the 1950s-and they still function. American cars of every shape, color and size can be seen on the street- many put together with parts from other cars- while they are not speedy anymore, they do provide a glimpse at what America was in the 60s.

Asides from cars, Cuba is home to several UNESCO world heritage sites. Most of these architectural wonders have not been seen by Americans. Some of them include the San Pedro de la Roca Castle at Santiago de Cuba, the second largest city in Cuba. This fort built in 1638 remains well preserved and is a classic example of Spanish-American military architecture at its finest. Another place to visit is the urban center of Cienfuegos, founded as a Spanish colony in 1819.

All over the island there are huge coffee and sugar cane plantations, some which date back many decades.

For those seeking the sun, Cuba has nearly 300 beaches stretching for miles on the southern and northern coastlines. Some of the secluded but popular beaches include Playa Ancon on the southern coast near the city of Trinidad and the Sirena and Playa Paraiso connected to each other on the island of Cayo Largo del Sur. Many such beaches remain untouched and remain free of the tourism mania. These beaches offer magnificent views of the surrounding landscape and coast line.

For those seeking lots of food, alcohol and pampering, just pick any inclusive resort in Vardero; a small resort town about an hour’s drive from Havana. This famous touristic mecca has all types of water activities, exotic seafood and plenty of sun. In addition, one can swim with the dolphins, go cave exploration or visit the nearby Varahicacos ecological reserve where one can hike and watch the exotic birds.

No matter where you go in Cuba, the one common theme everywhere is music and art- creativity is in the blood of Cubans and this is what makes Cuba appealing to tourists. Walk into any night club or bar and you will hear salsa, rumba, merengue, jazz and even R & R. The pulsating music can be heard in most homes from dusk to dawn. Another unique feature of Cuba is art. You will see art and painters available on almost every street corner.

The one downside to Cuba is that traveling inside the country is not easy. The country does not have a well developed public transport system and hitch hiking and renting cars are not recommended. The best way to get around is taxi or a tour bus.

As far as places to see, there is lots to see in this culture-rich country. Every town and cit has its own uniqueness and special history. Some of the places you should try and see include Havana, Trinidad, Vianles and Cienfuegos. These four places will offer you insight into Cuban culture and the people.

Finally Cubans love to eat and this is much more than the rice and beans that we all hear about. While they may not have the best ingredients, they more than make up the recipes with creativity. There are hundreds of cafes and restaurants in Havana all offering vintage Cuban and colonial food. From the Spanish tapas, grilled lobsters to hamburgers you can eat anything you want, at prices much cheaper than the US. If you love alcohol, then rest assured there is plenty of Rum and Tequila to wash down any lingering doubts you had about the place.

At the moment Americans can only go to Cuba via people-to-people tours through the licensed tour companies. While these companies offer somewhat pricey inclusive packages, things are changing fast and at some point in the future, American swill be able to travel to Cuba freely without such licenses. The best time to visit Cuba is now before the crowds get here -because we all know what happens when the Americans come!
