There are many products that are native to Cuba and that provide some excellent opportunities for those of you looking to start a business or to expand a present business, which focuses on exports and imports.

Some of the best products which I consider to be

Sugar from Cuba

Sugar is the country’s primary export good and the country produces over 5 million tons a year.

Most of this sugar is exported to trade partners including China and Russia and is dependent on the market price.

With many sugar mills closing there is an opportunity to invest in these mills to produce sugar.

Sugar is also used in the production of rum; one of Cuba’s other big export goods. Sugar continues to be one of the island’s leading exports.

Tobacco and Cigars

Cuba has the world’s second-largest area of tobacco plantations in the world.

There has been little change in the country’s output over the last 20 years and the majority of the tobacco and its products are exported.

Nearly all the tobacco is used to make cigars, one of the iconic symbols of Cuba.

The two main types of tobacco grown are Corojo and Criollo, and the plantations are based around the Pinar del Rio Province.

Cuba produces some of the world’s finest cigars and Cuban cigars are a great product to import into your own country to sell.

Do of course check your own country’s import requirements to ensure you meet the local import requirements.

Cuban cigars can offer the chance for a decent markup on the cost price.

Here the cigars are produced by hand by some of the biggest cigar companies in the world including Cohiba, Montecristo, and Romeo y Julieta.

The value of tobacco and cigar exports is estimated at nearly US$200 million.

As trade regulations are reduced, expect to see the exports of tobacco to increase significantly in the coming years.

Nickel

Cuba’s nickel deposits are among the greatest in the world, however, extraction is challenging due to other metals being present in the ore.

However, even with these difficulties, nickel is still the country’s second most valuable export product. Nickel is used in a wide range of products, both industrial and consumer goods.

The various products that can be made from nickel include stainless steel, coinage, alnico magnets, electric guitar strings, and rechargeable batteries.

Fruits

Given that Cuba sits in the Caribbean with a climate with average temperatures of between 20 and 30 Celsius pretty much all year round, it will come as no surprise for you to learn that fruits such as bananas, guava, papaya, and pineapples, in addition to some other tropical fruits.

There is certainly a market opportunity for the export of tropical fruits if you are interested in Cuban imports.
