10 Reasons to Avoid Cuba as a Holiday Destination

Cuba is not for everyone and there are a number of reasons you might want to avoid Cuba as a vacation or holiday destination.

Beach sports

Rather than the normal posts, I thought I might in this post give you some reasons to avoid Cuba, so here we go:

It’s Too Hot, Hot hot!

It can be far too hot and sunny for many of us who are not used to the Caribbean weather.

I am not sure where you are from, but us poor Brits (British people) are simply not used to long hours of sunshine each day, the humidity, and not seeing the rain and so it can be hard for us.

Drinking a cup of tea with milk just does not feel right in this kind of environment.

If you visit in the peaks months such as June, July, or August, expect the temperatures to reach as high as a whopping fifty Celsius.

October through to March is much more comfortable months in terms of the temperatures.

I Can’t Swim

With the great weather (provided you choose the right months) not being able to swim becomes a problem, when there is such a wide range of water sports you can try your hand at in Cuba.

Water skiing, jet skiing, the chance to take your diving certifications, scuba diving, and windsurfing, are just a few options at affordable prices in the coastal resorts in locations such as Varadero and Trinidad de Cuba.

If you cannot swim, visiting Cuba might just be too frustrating when you see just how much fun can be had on the water on this stunning coastline.

Vibrant Music and Dance is Not Fun

The good news is that no one will expect you to get up and dance or to play music, but you will need to be prepared for people who seem to spend half of their waking hours either dancing or enjoying the vibrant music style which hails from the island.

Music and dance have long been a way in which the Cuban people in hard times under the government, have found a way to still be able to express themselves.

Go to a bar in Havana and the chances are that there will be some form of live music and or dance at some point in the evening or at least on weekends.

If you really do not buy into this type of cultural fascination, maybe Cuba is not for you.

No Interest in Culture

If you like to go on holiday to enjoy a piece of home but in the sun, you might be disappointed in a city such as Havana given its uniqueness.

The city is more like a living museum, with the ancient 1950s American cars, numerous museums, and unique architecture.

The good news is that, if you prefer an all-inclusive resort in which you can avoid the hassle of having to delve into a new culture, there are some all-inclusive resorts that can help to protect you from having to experience something new.

There are many such very high-quality resorts in the main resorts areas such as Varadero and Cayo Coco.

Not a Fan of Hemingway

I cannot be the only person in the world who read Hemingway’s ‘Old Man and the Sea’ and who did not like the book.

I thought it was one of the most over-rated in literacy history personally.

One thing about Cuba is that Hemingway is revered and held up to be a reason to visit many of the bars and nightclubs in Havana, with many claiming to have been his favorite drinking establishment.

I am sure some of them were, but not all of them surely.

Although it is said that he could get through a few mojitos when he wanted to.

There is little escape from Hemingway, including with the local marina named after him and with a fishing competition also named after him so head to the exotic and stunning beaches and away from Havana if you are anti-Hemingway.

Cocktails

Cocktails are very popular in Cuba, but you do not have to try them.

Cristal and Hatuey beers are both popular if you seek to avoid the fancy drinks that seem to be enjoyed at affordable prices by many tourists and locals alike.

Cocktails such as mojito, sangria, pina colada, and the Cuban coladito, are just a few drinks you might want to avoid if you are not into fancy exotic drinks!

I do not Like Healthy and Tasty food

If you do not like food that is tasty and healthy at the same time, then Cuba is not for you.

The Cuban staple dish of black beans and rice used to accompany dishes made with fresh vegetables, meats, and spices such as garlic, pepper, and oregano.

Marinades are also very popular for meat that is afterward cooked to perfection.

Tropical fresh fruit, such as mango, papaya, and pineapple also grow on the island.

However, fresh and wholesome food is not to everyone’s taste, so you may want to give Cuba a miss if this is the case, or wait until international takeaway chains become common in Cuba!
